CINCO DE MAYO 2007 by Barb Perlmutter

Fleet 66 did another fine job of putting on the 2007 Cinco de Mayo regatta in Rocky Point.  Perhaps the best news of the weekend came when the front desk at Playa Bonita RV Park told us that they would be OPEN for at least 10 years.. yeah!   This guarantees us many more years of fun sailing in the beautiful waters of the Sea of Cortez.

A total of 25 boats sailed on both days with boats arriving from Texas, Nevada, California, Colorado as well as Arizona.  Ted and Sue Lindley along with Bob West, Tom Banks and Tom’s friend Ed,  managed a well run committee boat.  Ted also made some beautiful hand-crafted/sand-blasted/wood-painted trophies.   Roger and Patty Hensler were regatta chairmen and enjoyed starting every race on their fast Hobie 16.  Bea and Bill Haneman did a great job at the registration table.  Many thanks go to Gary and Wanda Lucht who helped deliver delicious chicken dinners on Saturday night as well as delivering the racing marks.  Our new Fleet 514 chase boat guy, Greg Carlson, helped Fleet 66 out on the water each day with his nice aluminum boat.  Greg and his helpers, Dan Dolan and Dave Fisher were kept very busy due to the strong winds, moving marks and righting boats.

Fortunately no one was injured during the regatta... wait, I can’t say that.  My left arm is all bruised badly from my first Hobie 18 crewing experience.  John Eger and I kept the pointy end up in the strong winds and mega waves both days.  On Saturday some rogue wave hit my feet while we were double trapped and I lost my footing.  From that point on, I remember being snapped against the shroud until I could get my butt back up on the hull.  We did pull off a first place 18A victory, so I suppose the bruises (and memories) make it all worth while.... I sure appreciate, when you bury the leeward hull on the H18, that it doesn’t  pitch pole.  We would have been over a few times if the H18 pitched like a H16.   It was sure a fun ride, Thanks John.
