Barb’s San Carlos Review
Ahoy,
We had SO MUCH fun in San Carlos at the Tucson Sailing Club Memorial
Day regatta. I've attached a few photos. Dolphins swam in front of
our hotel balcony all day long. The weather was perfect, 80's and
breezy. The water was nice and warm, great snorkeling.
The sailing was kinda light on Saturday. Tony & Lani Krauss beat us by
45 seconds. Fortunately, on Sunday, the wind Gods were kinder and it was single trap wind. We were barely ahead of Tony and Lani at the last island rounding on Sunday but with the final 5 mile reach, no one could catch us. We just took off. I think we won by about 2 minutes and 20 seconds, which allowed us to WIN first place at the trophy presentation (a large tall ship, fully rigged, very nice trophy). Fun racing.
My highlight: Tony and Jeff hit traffic at one of the roundings. A
BIG monohull got in Tony's wind. Jeff and I just squeezed by to
windward of them... from that point on we led the race. . . . it was a
wonderful thing (grin). Kevin Walker was sailing fast with his team,
they won 2nd in their class. Brian Dolan and Stu Willoughby won their classes too. Anyways, that is such a great regatta/place, it's our favorite. The food was fabulous at every place we ate. The Fiesta Hotel was very nice ($90per night) and we had a great 7 day vacation. We had about 90 minutes of waiting coming north at the border last Tuesday afternoon, lots of traffic.Hope we see more catamarans down there next Memorial Day, what a great
destination!
